Lion dance:
- Southern lion was introduced to SEA countries by Chinese migrants before introduction of dragon dance.
- Northern lion was introduced to Singapore in 1930s.
- Significance is a traditional performance to: exorcise demons from houses and to bring fortune and happiness into the home.
- Originates from coastal provinces of Guangdong (Fushan Lion, Heshan Lion, Hakka Lion and Hainan Lion - in order of introduction to SEA) and Fujian (Green Lion).
- Fushan and Heshan Lion are known as "Fushan Zhuang" and "Heshan Zhuang" respectively
- In 2003, SNWF designed the Singapore Lion with local multi-culture features.
- The Singapore Lion was modeled with reference to the two stone lions that were placed on the side of Nicoll highway; the colour is red, the same as that on the national flag.
- Concept: SM Goh Chok Tong, when he officiated the opening ceremony of the SNWF premise in 2003.
Northern Lion:
- Designed and made to resemble the features of a real lion. It resembles the stone lions in front of temples or classic Chinese buildings.
- During performances, two people will be in the lion. A third person dons a Chinese martial arts costume, ties a red silk cloth on the head and a red band round the waist and holds a red embroidered ball.
- Lion starts by waving its body and tail and leaping up high. It then jumps on the table.
Fujian Green Lion:
- Originates from Fujian, and requires a good martial arts foundation.
1. Green lion with white eyebrow (Old Lion)
The Old Lion often has its mouth open, and has a gentle characteristic.
It often performs in Fujian households to welcome gods.
The leader of the troupe must offer to the master of the household a red card that symbolizes a gift for the first meeting with the owner of the household, a pair of red candles, a bunch of fragrance joss sticks, and gold joss papers.
The master of the house must light the candles and burn the incense to worship the gods.
Following that, the green lion performs to ask the gods to bring peace, luck, safety and abundance in their household.
2. Green face sword lion (Fighting / Dou Lion)
Aggressive, fierce, malicious looking and looks like it wants to massacre.
Creation of Han patriot to symbolize Qing dynasty Manchu emperors' clan of Aisin Gioro.
Defeat of Green Lion symbolizes defeat of Qing Dynasty.
Green face with bucktooth, short hairs, a mouth that seldom opens, a pair of duanjian in the middle of its eyebrows, and tongling man gua its face.
The features of the green lion are no longer malicious looking, as it is practiced to exercise the body and promote martial arts.
3. Tong shi (Song Jiang shi)
Big head and a long body.
Every team must have 108 people to depict the Liang mountain heroes of Shui Hu Zhuan - complete team.
There will be 100 - 200 people with different weapons and costumes.
Popular in Jinjiang, Jinmen, Anxi, Yonchun, Nan'an, Dehua, Zhangzhou and Taiwan.
Lingnan shi's classification:
1。 黄面: 白眉长须,紫色角,色彩为七彩及五彩面,名称瑞狮,成为刘备。
2。 红黑面: 青鼻,黑妹,黑序,名称为形式,为关运长(关公)。
3。 黑白面铁角: 青鼻,黑眉长须,口角各一bucktooth,名称为猛狮,成为张飞。
4。 银须黄花点: 名称为画面狮以及成为黄忠狮。
5。 青面白须: 月眉刀,has buckteeth, and flat face. Known as Liu Zhen.
6。 青白面白须: 白眉,铁角,成为 Zhao Yun Shi.
7。 金面银须: Has two types of character. Gold lion.
Lions with white beard: senior, steady, prudent.
Black beard: invincible, brave and wise, fighting spirit.
Yellow coloured: kindhearted, auspicious, brave.
Red coloured: brave and wise, might, chivalry.
Black and white coloured: loyal, courageous, power.
Green coloured: friendly, invincible.
