Hmm im very wu2 liao2 so i went to write out something that popped into my head while i was hoping for something... and i stopped hoping for that thing
Equivalent Exchange
Equivalent exchange is a rule that most people believe. This naïve thinking that if they offer something of equal value, the thing that they want would come true. This may seem true for business as trading comes when you need the offered item more than the one you own. That would mean that at least one item is of equal value to one party, the value of both the item can never be equal to one party himself.
The value of the thing you trade will never be the same as the one you are bidding for. If it was the same, one would not offer that item. It is not possible for one to want something so much and be able to offer something of the same value away. The moment he or she chooses to use that item for trading, its value has already gone down much lower than the item he or she wants. Thus, the rule of equivalent exchange does not exist.
“Equivalent Exchange: The rule that alchemists in the series consider to be the foundation of Alchemy, or even the fundamental law of the world: to obtain, something of equal value must be lost. One of the themes of the series is examining the implications of Equivalent Exchange as a philosophy. It also investigates into whether Equivalent Exchange is a natural law, or rather, a false ideology. As an example, the two brothers frequently quote the chemicals present in the human body, in thinking that this simple chemical exchange would be all that was needed to bring someone from the dead.”
-Full Metal Alchemist, wikipedia.
Most religious people go to churches or temples and hope for what they want; but how can one hope for one thing after another? It destroys the balance of things in the world. Thus, things can never go the way you want. Some people resort to equivalent exchange by hoping for something and giving up something in return. But, the wish would not be grant as the items do not have equal value. The value can never be set by the person him or herself.
That is how balance is kept in this world, there is no use hoping for something, it will come when you have exchanged it with time. The moment you get it is the moment you have already exchanged it with its equivalent.
